I’ll Drastically Cut Radio Stations To Below 100 If I Must – Sam George Fires Warning

Communication Minister Sam Nartey George has criticized the National Communications Authority (NCA) for what he describes as a “careless and disproportionate” approval of over 600 radio frequencies in Ghana, calling it detrimental to the country’s media landscape.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on April 14, 2025, Sam George argued that the media space is oversaturated and harmful to industry growth. He stated that many frequency holders lack original programming and primarily syndicate political shows and recycled news.

If given the mandate, he said he would slash the number of licensed radio stations to fewer than 100, though he acknowledged the move could be politically misinterpreted. He advocated for the enforcement of strict Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure that only serious broadcasters with quality content retain access to radio frequencies.
