Confidently checking all the boxes in the category and determined to make history as the first artiste to win the ultimate Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Artiste of the Year (AOTY) award back-to-back, Dancehall star Stonebwoy has declared that he has no challenger in this year’s race.

As the reigning TGMA Artiste of the Year, Stonebwoy is convinced that the title is already his, despite facing tough competition from King Promise, Black Sherif, Kweku Smoke, Joe Mettle, King Paluta, and Team Eternity Ghana.

According to the category’s definition, the Artiste of the Year is awarded to the artiste(s) deemed by the Academy, Board, and General Public to have had the highest audience appeal and popularity within the year under review. The artiste must have released a hit single, EP, or album and be among those with the highest nominations for the period.

Speaking to Graphic Showbiz on Monday, March 24, Vida Adutwumwaa Boateng, Head of Public Relations for Burniton Music Group (BMG) – Stonebwoy’s record label – emphasized that, based on the work done within the year under review, the Jiggle and Whine hitmaker stands out among the competition.

“With the category’s definition prioritizing audience appeal and the highest nominations, no artiste in that category surpasses Stonebwoy,” she stated.

“First, Stonebwoy has three major hits—Psalm 23, Ekelebe, and Jiggle and Whine—all from his Up and Runnin6 album, and each has been nominated in various TGMA categories. No other artiste in the calendar year has achieved this feat.”

“Consider a solid 13-track album featuring Wyclef Jean, Spice, Odumodublvck, Ginton, IR Sais, Duncan Mighty, and Amaria BB, which has gained significant recognition not only in Ghana but also across the Caribbean and globally.”

“Additionally, this year, Stonebwoy secured eight nominations, making him the most-nominated artiste at the TGMA 2024—a record none of his competitors in the Artiste of the Year category can match.”

“His street credibility is unmatched, and his shows consistently sell out—not just in Ghana, but even on his recent UK tour, which proves his appeal beyond our borders,” Ms. Boateng stated.

She dismissed ongoing debates suggesting that Stonebwoy should not be the frontrunner simply because he has won the award twice before, arguing that such opinions are unnecessary.

According to her, the Artiste of the Year title is awarded based on merit, and industry players should not be influenced by fan-driven narratives.

“For those saying he’s won it before and should step aside for younger artistes, they need to understand that Stonebwoy’s brand is built on hard work and consistency. His dedication has made him Ghana’s most sought-after performer and biggest music export. We shouldn’t compromise on consistency just to reward newcomers in the category,” she emphasized.

Stonebwoy, however, described the Artiste of the Year race as a healthy competition and congratulated his fellow nominees, encouraging such creative rivalry in the industry.

Following the success of his Up and Runnin6 concert in London—where he filled the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire—Stonebwoy expressed gratitude to Live Nation for their partnership in making the event a success.

“This wasn’t my first time performing in the UK, but this live concert created a refreshing connection with fans in the UK, including audiences from the Caribbean, Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK itself,” he said.
