The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has debunked international media reports alleging that the United States plans to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a national of El Salvador, to Ghana.

Several foreign media outlets reported on Friday, October 10, 2025, that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had informed Abrego Garcia’s lawyers of its intention to deport him to Ghana. The reports further claimed that DHS had previously considered deporting him to Eswatini and Uganda after he was mistakenly sent to El Salvador and later returned to the U.S.

However, in a Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa firmly rejected the claims, clarifying that Ghana has no arrangement to receive Abrego Garcia and that this stance has been clearly communicated to U.S. authorities.

He explained that Ghana’s understanding with the United States covers only the acceptance of non-criminal West African nationals, and even then, strictly under humanitarian and solidarity considerations.

“In my interactions with U.S. officials, I made it clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles, would not be expanded,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

He further emphasized that Ghana strongly objects to the misleading media reports, reaffirming that the country’s diplomatic commitments do not extend to individuals outside the agreed framework.
