The founder of Heaven Way Champion International Ministry was convicted on July 3, 2025, and sentenced to 15 years with hard labour for defrauding members of the public. In a separate case involving charlatanic advertisement, she was fined 25 penalty units or risked an additional 30 days in jail. The two fraud-related sentences were ordered to run concurrently, per the ruling delivered by Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah at the Circuit Court.
Following the verdict, Nana Agradaa’s legal counsel, led by Richard Asare Baffour, promptly filed an appeal against both the conviction and the sentence. However, with no date yet assigned for the appeal hearing, the team filed an application for bail pending appeal on July 9, 2025.
In their submission, the lawyers argued that the appeal has strong merit. “The applicant is optimistic that the appeal has a high probability of success due to fundamental flaws in the trial proceedings and the clear bias shown by the presiding judge,” they stated.
Supporting their case, the legal team emphasized Agradaa’s willingness to adhere strictly to any bail conditions imposed, including regular appearances in court and a commitment not to obstruct the legal process.
“She will present herself to the court as required and pledges not to violate or undermine the conditions of the bail,” the motion noted, adding that her sureties are ready to provide adequate security.
In her petition, Nana Agradaa insists the legal process that led to her conviction was inherently unjust.
“The applicant believes the trial was conducted unfairly, shifting the burden of proof onto her to establish her innocence, rather than obligating the prosecution to prove her guilt beyond reasonable doubt,” the document read.
