Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly beating the NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes in a highly competitive rerun.

“A win was expected because we worked so hard,” Aubynn said after her victory was declared.

This marks the first time in Ghana’s Fourth Republic that the NDC has won the Ablekuma North seat, long considered an NPP stronghold.

The rerun followed a prolonged legal and electoral dispute stemming from the December 2024 general election, when violence at the collation center halted the counting of votes from 19 polling stations. A High Court ruling later directed the Electoral Commission to conclude the process, which eventually led to a re-run in the affected areas.

Over 6,000 voters were expected to cast their ballots. While the process was largely peaceful, there were isolated incidents of violence reported in some parts of the constituency.

The victory gives the NDC a significant morale boost and adds to its parliamentary numbers in what has been a hotly contested electoral cycle.
