Gov’t Plans To Convert National Cathedral Site Into Cultural Convention Center

The government has announced that the site initially designated for the National Cathedral will now be repurposed into the National Cultural Convention Centre (NCCC) a flagship facility for Ghana’s creative economy and cultural diplomacy.

Outlined in the “SH0W24” policy under the 24-hour economy initiative for culture, creative arts, and tourism, the NCCC will be developed in partnership with the AfCFTA Secretariat. It is envisioned as Africa’s leading venue for international exhibitions, film festivals, trade shows, and global summits.

According to the policy document, the transformation addresses critical infrastructure needs without conflicting with national or religious values.

“This venue will serve as Africa’s premier cultural diplomacy and creative economy forum… filling a critical infrastructure gap without conflicting with national values or faith institutions,” it states.

The move represents a significant shift from the original National Cathedral project, which has faced mounting public criticism over delays and budget concerns.

The NCCC will serve as the centrepiece of Ghana’s creative economy agenda and is part of a broader strategy to elevate the arts, culture, and tourism sectors as engines of economic growth.

The SH0W24 plan also includes the creation of a National Creators Academy to train youth in fields such as film, music, fashion, digital media, and performance. Training will incorporate cutting-edge tools like AI, virtual reality, and cultural entrepreneurship.

Feasibility studies for the NCCC are set to begin during Phase 1 (2025–2026), with full commissioning expected in Phase 3 (2028–2030).
