The High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced 32-year-old gospel singer Timileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Salome Adaidu, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Delivering the judgment on Thursday, June 26, 2025, Justice Simon Aboki found Ajayi guilty of culpable homicide following a months-long trial. The verdict was delivered in accordance with Section 221 of the Penal Code, which governs criminal offenses in northern Nigeria.

“The evidence before the court clearly shows that the accused intentionally caused the death of the deceased. The law is clear on this, and the punishment is death. Therefore, the accused is hereby sentenced to death by hanging,” Justice Aboki ruled.

Background of the Case:

Ajayi’s conviction comes after his own chilling confession earlier this year. In January 2025, he admitted to killing Adaidu, claiming she had been unfaithful to him. His confession, made publicly in an interview with Channels TV, was devoid of remorse. “I killed her because we don’t have each other all the time. It’s not something I planned. It happened on that day… She was cheating. I saw her chats with other guys on her phone,” Ajayi said. “I don’t have any regrets because life is reciprocal… You have to understand what someone is going through. That is why I don’t have any regrets,” he added coldly.

Ajayi was arrested in possession of the victim’s severed body parts and has been held in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Nasarawa State Police Command in Lafia since his confession.

The case has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed conversations about gender-based violence and mental health in relationships.

President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), women’s rights advocates, and mental health professionals have called for greater awareness, preventive measures, and justice system reforms in the wake of this brutal killing.
