Chad Suspends US Visas For American Citizens In Retaliation For Trump’s Travel Ban

The Central African nation of Chad has announced it will suspend all visas for US citizens as a reciprocal measure, following news that its nationals are among a dozen countries barred from traveling to the United States.

“Chad may not have airplanes to offer or billions of dollars to give, but Chad has its dignity and pride,” President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno stated in a Facebook post (in French) on Thursday.

Africa is the continent most impacted by the travel ban introduced by US President Donald Trump, with seven out of the twelve countries on the list located there.

The ban is scheduled to take effect on Monday.

It bars individuals from Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan—as well as Afghanistan, Myanmar, Haiti, Iran, and Yemen—from entering the United States.

Additionally, nationals from Burundi, Sierra Leone, Togo, Cuba, Laos, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela will face restrictions on certain visa types, preventing them from traveling to the US under those visas.

“We will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm,” Trump said in a video shared on X.

The US president added that the list may be updated if “material improvements” occur and that more countries could be added as “threats emerge around the world.”

The White House described these “common-sense restrictions” as measures to “protect Americans from dangerous foreign actors.”
