Chairman Wontumi Freed By EOCO After Fulfilling Bail Conditions
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after satisfying strict bail requirements set by the court.

His release was confirmed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua on the evening of Monday, June 2, 2025. Kodua commended Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture, for stepping in as one of the sureties, which played a key role in securing Wontumi’s freedom.

Chairman Wontumi had been granted bail set at GH₵50 million, with two justified sureties. He was arrested on May 27, 2025, in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged fraud, money laundering, and financial loss to the state. Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai has further indicated that Wontumi may be linked to a wider international organised crime syndicate.

Meanwhile, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is independently compiling a docket on the case, separate from ongoing investigations by EOCO and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Wontumi’s release followed several days of legal hurdles and political pressure. Despite meeting the bail conditions by May 30, 2025, with legal counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi confirming submission of all required documents, his release was delayed by a legal challenge seeking a review of the bail terms. That application was eventually withdrawn on June 2, allowing for his release.
Throughout his detention, NPP Members of Parliament and party supporters staged demonstrations, describing the GH₵50 million bail as excessive and politically motivated. A court hearing initially set for June 3, 2025, to review the bail was rendered unnecessary following the withdrawal of the motion.
Wontumi’s release remains conditional upon full compliance with the ongoing investigations.
