President John Dramani Mahama has added his voice to the growing global call for reparations from former colonial powers to African nations, emphasizing that the time has come for justice, acknowledgment, and healing.
Speaking during a presidential address on African Union Day, Mahama highlighted the enduring impact of slavery, colonialism, and neo-colonialism on the African continent and its diaspora.
“For far too long, the legacy of slavery, colonialism, and neo-colonialism has cast a long shadow over the lives and progress of Africans and people of African descent,” he said. “These historical injustices have left deep and painful scars. Reparations are not just about financial compensation—they are about recognizing the deep and lasting damage inflicted on our people.”
Mahama’s remarks were more than a reflection on the past; they were a rallying cry for collaborative action. He urged African leaders, institutions, and global partners to come together to shape a future rooted in justice and mutual respect.
