“You Can’t Judge Africa Without Visiting Ghana And Nigeria” – Tems

Nigerian singer and global music icon Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, is urging the world to experience Africa firsthand—starting with Ghana and Nigeria—before forming opinions about the continent.

In a compelling interview with Fashion Bomb Daily during the 2025 Met Gala on May 5, Tems addressed common misconceptions about Africa and the often narrow lens through which African music is viewed internationally.

“We’re not just Afrobeats. There’s Amapiano, Afrosoul, R&B, Afro Jazz… there’s so much more happening on the continent that people haven’t tapped into yet,” she emphasized.

Renowned for her soulful voice and groundbreaking global impact, Tems spotlighted the rich creativity emerging from Africa—particularly from Nigeria and Ghana—as deserving of deeper recognition and respect.

But her message went beyond music. Tems encouraged people around the world to travel and connect with African culture on a personal level.

“I always tell people—go to Lagos, go to Ghana. Take a vacation, no agenda. Just go. See it for yourself, feel it for yourself,” she said. Reflecting on the essence of African identity, she added that the continent’s magic lies in its daily rhythm, its people, and its unmatched cultural vibrancy.

“It’s the creativity, the daily effort, the fashion, the music, the traditions—the culture. It’s all of that,” Tems concluded.
