On Thursday, May 29, some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) blocked a police riot control vehicle using a pick-up truck and car tyres to protest the continued detention of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The incident occurred outside the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), where Chairman Wontumi was being held.

The protest followed a solidarity march led by NPP loyalists—including several Members of Parliament—who walked from Parliament House to the EOCO offices to demand his immediate release.

Earlier in the day, the Minority in Parliament staged a walkout in objection to the bail conditions imposed on Chairman Wontumi, who had already spent nearly 48 hours in custody.

Upon arriving at the EOCO headquarters, the NPP supporters gathered at the main entrance, linking hands and chanting solidarity songs as they demanded the immediate release of Chairman Wontumi.

Tensions heightened when a police riot control vehicle attempted to enter the premises. The crowd responded with defiance—hooting at the vehicle and using a pick-up truck to block its access.

To reinforce the blockade, some protesters dragged car tyres onto the road, while others banged on the vehicle and vowed not to allow it through.

Amid the standoff, police officers on the scene engaged with the demonstrators in an attempt to calm tensions and better understand their grievances.
