On Friday, just as EOCO officers prepared to vet property documents submitted by Bryan Acheampong—Member of Parliament for Abetifi constituency and surety for Wontumi—through Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, they were informed of a new application filed on May 30, 2025, to review the GH₵50 million bail bond.

Acheampong’s title documents have been valued above the GH₵50 million bail amount granted to Chairman Wontumi. However, EOCO officers were unable to proceed with the vetting process due to the pending bail variation application.

Appiah-Kubi disclosed to the press that he was unaware of the application until Friday evening, which has delayed the bail process. Consequently, Chairman Wontumi will remain in custody until the High Court rules on the application scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Mr. Gary Nimako Marfo, who filed the bail variation application, may opt to withdraw it before the hearing, allowing EOCO to vet Acheampong’s documents on Monday, June 2, potentially securing Wontumi’s release on bail pending investigations.

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation for multiple alleged offenses, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state, according to the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai.

The Deputy Attorney-General further revealed that alongside the criminal probe, asset recovery efforts are underway to prevent the dissipation of suspected illicit proceeds. Additionally, there is an ongoing inquiry into Wontumi’s alleged involvement in a larger international organized crime network, with EOCO collaborating closely with international law enforcement agencies.

Wontumi has already spent three nights in custody after initially failing to meet bail conditions. His bail was set at GH₵50 million with two sureties required to justify property or bank documents equivalent to the bail amount.
