Wontumi To Appear Before CID Today

Barring any last-minute changes, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—is expected to honour an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service today, May 26, 2025.

His lawyer, Kwame Adom Appiah, confirmed their readiness in an interview with Citi News in Accra, stressing that Wontumi has nothing to hide and is committed to cooperating fully with the authorities.

“We live in a democracy. Wontumi isn’t someone who hides from the media or flees from accountability. He has substantial investments in Ghana—he’s not running away. If the authorities need him, he’ll be there. We haven’t done anything criminal, and we’re not afraid to face them,” Appiah said.

This follows a failed attempt by a joint team of National Security and police officers to arrest Wontumi at his Kumasi residence on Friday, May 23.

Wontumi was originally scheduled to appear before the CID on Wednesday, May 21, but rescheduled to 10:00 a.m. today, citing ill health.

The raid on his residence has sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning the necessity of such an aggressive approach, especially given his stated willingness to engage with law enforcement.

Responding to the incident, Chairman Wontumi alleged a plot to frame him. According to him, reliable sources indicated that the security operatives intended to plant illicit substances such as marijuana, cocaine, or even gold in his home to incriminate him.
