Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV, Dr. Ayew Afriyie admitted that Wontumi “went overboard” in some of his recent video recordings, which have stirred controversy and triggered investigations. “For Chairman Wontumi’s case, we’re going to beg. The hand behind this is bigger than the people who run EOCO and the intelligence agencies. I will put it at the doorstep of President Mahama,” he stated.

The MP disclosed that he had personally shown Wontumi several of the videos in question on June 9 and warned him that the content had crossed the line. “I told him we will go and beg. If we have to kneel before President Mahama, we will tell him that for these videos, Wontumi went too far,” he added.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on May 27, shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra. He was later released on June 2 after meeting a bail requirement of GHS50 million.

His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has confirmed that Wontumi is expected to return to EOCO for further questioning on June 4 and again on June 9, 2025.

The ongoing investigation has fueled speculation about deeper political undercurrents, with Dr. Ayew Afriyie suggesting that the influence behind Wontumi’s case extends beyond the current intelligence and investigative institutions.
