Veteran Nollywood Actress Nkechi Nweje Dies At 60
Veteran Nollywood actress Nkechi Nweje has passed away at the age of 60 after a brief illness. Her death was confirmed on March 22, 2025, by movie producer Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop, who expressed his grief on social media, describing Nweje as a vibrant actress and a close confidant.
Nkechi Nweje was renowned for her compelling portrayals of motherly roles in Nollywood. She featured in several notable films, including Royal War, Festival of Sorrow, and Coming Back from Congo. Her recent project, The Debt, premiered on YouTube shortly before her passing.

Born on June 6, 1964, Nweje hailed from Onitsha, Anambra State. She was a devoted Christian, a graduate, and was married to Dr. Azubuike Nweje. The couple had six children. Reports indicate that she underwent major stomach surgery in November 2024 and had been recovering until her sudden demise.
The Nollywood community and fans have been mourning her loss. Actress Rita Edochie shared a candlelight image on Instagram with the caption, “This world is not our home,” reflecting the deep sorrow felt within the industry.
Nkechi Nweje’s passing adds to a series of recent losses in the Nigerian film industry, including actors Columbus Irosanga, Pat Ugwu, and Asa Koko earlier this year. Her contributions to Nollywood and her memorable performances will be fondly remembered by colleagues and fans alike.
