President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency following an evaluation for leg swelling, the White House announced on Thursday.

According to press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump, 79, underwent a thorough medical assessment, including vascular diagnostic studies, conducted by the White House Medical Unit. Leavitt read from a statement issued by the president’s physician, Capt. Sean Barbabella.

The physician’s letter, later released by the White House, noted that “bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds were performed and revealed chronic venous insufficiency a common and benign condition, especially in individuals over the age of 70.”

The examination was prompted by Trump’s observation of mild swelling in his lower legs in recent weeks, Leavitt added.

Importantly, the tests showed no signs of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease, and Trump’s lab results were all within normal ranges. He also underwent an echocardiogram, which found no evidence of heart failure, kidney issues, or systemic illness, Barbabella confirmed.

Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when vein valves don’t function properly, allowing blood to pool in the legs. It affects around 150,000 people annually, with incidence increasing with age. Symptoms may include swelling in the lower legs or ankles, cramping or aching, varicose veins, pain, or skin changes. Treatment options range from medication to medical procedures in more advanced cases.

“This isn’t alarming, and it’s not unexpected,” Dr. Jeremy Faust, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School, told CNN. “It’s a fairly normal part of aging, especially for someone in the overweight to obese category, which has consistently described the president. That said, symptoms like these should always be evaluated to rule out more serious conditions which was done here.”

Cardiologist Dr. Bernard Ashby also noted to CNN that chronic venous insufficiency can sometimes be linked to other health issues such as elevated pressure from the heart or sleep apnea.
