The Term ‘Detty December’ Is Destroying Our Country’s Reputation – Speaker Bagbin Opines
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has expressed strong disapproval of the term “Detty December,” asserting that it tarnishes Ghana’s international reputation.
He voiced his concerns during a recent Labour Day event, stating that the phrase suggests Ghana is a place where foreigners can come and act without restraint, thereby eroding the nation’s moral and spiritual fabric .
Bagbin also criticized initiatives like the “Year of Return” and “Beyond the Return,” arguing that they have been overshadowed by activities associated with “Detty December,” which he believes promote substance abuse and moral decline .
In response, Ghanaian musician Rex Omar defended the term, explaining that “Detty” in local slang refers to enjoyment and celebration, not anything negative. He emphasized that “Detty December” showcases Ghana’s rich cultural heritage through music, dance, and art, attracting both locals and international visitors.
This debate highlights differing perspectives on how Ghana’s festive branding impacts its global image.
