The Children’s Support Fund, launched by President John Dramani Mahama to safeguard the future of the children of victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, has so far accumulated GHS 2,315,000.00.

This was revealed in a statement by Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and Coordinator of the Fund, who noted that the initiative is already enjoying significant support from corporate Ghana.

President Mahama first announced the establishment of the Fund on Friday, August 15, 2025, during the state funeral for the eight individuals who perished in the crash. He stressed that the Fund was created to provide long-term care, covering the education, welfare, and overall well-being of the bereaved children.

Government extended its gratitude to Stanbic Bank Ghana for its initial seed donation of GHS 500,000.00, and further acknowledged contributions from:

  • GB Foods Ghana

  • Sunda FM Manufacturing Ltd

  • Sage Distribution Ltd

  • Quantum Oil Terminals

  • Quantum LPG Logistics Ltd

  • Newgas Cylinder Ltd

  • Quantum Terminals PLC

Dr. Sawyerr further indicated that donations may be made through Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited (Stanbic Heights Branch, Accra) via the following accounts:

Cheques and bank drafts should be addressed to CHILDREN SUPPORT FUND 6825. To ensure transparency, she added, a list of donors will be published weekly.

The Fund, she emphasized, reflects government’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of the crash victims by ensuring sustained care for their children. It is expected to continue attracting contributions from individuals, organizations, and institutions across the country.

The tragic helicopter crash, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofoum District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Murtala Muhammed, and three crew members.

The accident sent shockwaves across the nation, drawing widespread tributes from government officials, security services, traditional leaders, and the general public.

A state funeral was held on Friday, August 15, 2025, attended by President Mahama, senior government officials, security officers, traditional authorities, and grieving families. It was during this solemn ceremony that the President formally announced the creation of the Children’s Support Fund to secure the future of the victims’ children.
