Streaming Not Enough, Let’s Bring Back CDs And Pen Drives – Philipa Baafi
Gospel musician Philipa Baafi is advocating for the return of CDs and pen drives as part of music distribution in Ghana, arguing that they could help artistes break even and generate better returns on their investments.

While the “Go Go High” hitmaker supports music streaming, she believes the Ghanaian music industry rushed into the digital space without fully maximising the benefits of physical sales.
Philipa, who took a three-year break from music to train as a Physician Assistant, told Graphic Showbiz on Monday, May 13, 2024, that a combination of both systems would provide artistes and stakeholders with more reliable ways to monetise their craft. She made this call shortly after releasing the video for her latest single “Eda Ho Pefee” on her birthday, May 15.

“Streaming is good, but CDs and pen drives are still relevant. We’re not fully there yet compared to Western countries. In Ghana, many people don’t even use social media. If I take CDs or pen drives to churches, they will sell, because people still play music in their cars or in spaces where digital access is limited,” she said.
Highlighting the financial strain artistes face, the “I Go Dance” singer noted the high costs of production: GH₵6,000 for studio sessions, GH₵50,000 for music videos, and up to GH₵100,000 for effective promotion. “How are you going to raise that money if you’re not selling?” she questioned.

Contrary to the belief that CDs and pen drives are outdated, Philipa insists there is still strong demand. She stressed that artistes should not rely solely on streaming platforms but also invest in physical sales to expand revenue streams.
“People may think I’m old school, but I know what I’m saying. Consumers are still out there, and they’re buying. We shouldn’t only focus on digital stores,” she concluded.
