Special Prosecutor Declares Ken Ofori-Atta Wanted Over Alleged Financial Irregularities
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta wanted, citing allegations of financial misconduct and procurement irregularities. The declaration comes amidst an ongoing investigation into Mr. Ofori-Atta’s role in the financing and management of key national projects, including the controversial National Cathedral construction.
According to sources within the OSP, Mr. Ofori-Atta is being sought for questioning over alleged breaches of public procurement laws and unexplained payments linked to the Cathedral project. Despite being invited for questioning, he has reportedly been unresponsive, prompting the Special Prosecutor to take this drastic step.
The National Cathedral project has been a subject of intense public scrutiny, with concerns raised over its funding, transparency, and prioritization amidst Ghana’s economic challenges. The Special Prosecutor’s investigations are said to focus on how contracts were awarded and whether due processes were followed in disbursing state funds.
In a statement, the OSP urged the public to assist with information that could lead to the former Finance Minister’s apprehension: “The Office of the Special Prosecutor remains committed to ensuring accountability and transparency in the use of public funds. We call on all citizens to cooperate in this investigation by providing any relevant information about the whereabouts of Mr. Ofori-Atta.”
The announcement comes just weeks after reports surfaced about a raid on Mr. Ofori-Atta’s residence, an operation the OSP claims was part of its broader investigation into his financial dealings. Close associates of the former minister, however, have alleged that he was out of the country for medical treatment during the raid, sparking a debate over the timing and execution of the operation.
This is not the first time Mr. Ofori-Atta has faced public backlash. During his tenure as Finance Minister, he was criticized for his handling of Ghana’s economic crisis, which included soaring inflation, a depreciating cedi, and controversial government spending. While Mr. Ofori-Atta has yet to respond to the latest developments, his legal team has hinted at potential legal action to address what they describe as a politically motivated witch-hunt.
