Sim Card Re-registration Goes Digital In June To Eliminate Queues – Sam George
The upcoming SIM card re-registration exercise, scheduled for June 2025, is expected to proceed without the long queues that characterized previous phases, thanks to a newly streamlined process aimed at improving efficiency and convenience for citizens.
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, disclosed this during a visit to Margins ID Group (Intelligent Card Production Systems) in Accra on Tuesday, April 8. He announced that citizens will now be able to register their SIM cards online, significantly reducing the need for physical visits to registration centers.
The upgraded system is designed to automatically verify citizen information, minimizing manual processing and cutting down on wait times while improving data accuracy. Initially launched in 2021, the SIM card re-registration exercise has seen multiple deadline extensions due to low participation, with millions of active SIM cards still unregistered.

The exercise mandates all SIM card users to register their numbers using the Ghana Card, the country’s official national ID. Concerns about data security and potential fraud via the mobile app have been raised by some Ghanaians, but the government remains firm in its objective to strengthen national security by curbing criminal activity facilitated through unregistered SIMs, while also enhancing regulatory oversight through the maintenance of accurate subscriber data.
