Sarkodie Files Lawsuit Against Ecobank And Lookalike Over Unauthorized Ad
Award-winning Ghanaian rapper, Sarkodie (real name Michael Owusu Addo), has filed a lawsuit against Ecobank Ghana at the Commercial Division of the High Court, accusing the financial institution of using a lookalike in an advertisement without his consent.
The suit, which has stirred public debate, centers on allegations of intellectual property infringement and reputational damage. According to court filings, Sarkodie contends that the advertisement featured a person with a striking resemblance to him, misleading the public into believing he endorsed the bank’s services.
As the official brand ambassador for First Bank, a direct competitor, Sarkodie argues that the campaign caused brand confusion and potentially harmed his existing commercial partnerships.
The lawsuit seeks:
-
Compensation for reputational and financial damages
-
A permanent injunction against the unauthorized use of his image
-
The immediate removal of all related advertisements across digital and print platforms
Sarkodie’s legal team stated: “Using a lookalike of a public figure—especially one with existing endorsements—crosses ethical boundaries. This wasn’t just misleading; it jeopardized our client’s professional integrity.”
Ecobank has been given eight days to respond to the court summons or risk a default judgment. As of now, the bank has not released an official statement.
