The affected employees were hired after the December 7, 2024, elections, a period during which the minister asserts that proper procedures were not adhered to.

Addressing the press on March 25, 2025, Sam George emphasized his commitment to streamlining the ministry’s workforce for enhanced efficiency. He revealed that upon assuming office, he discovered that out of 3,117 staff across the ministry and its agencies, approximately 600 had been recruited post-election. He stated, “You cannot expect me to come and inherit such a mess, and so the rationalisation is ongoing.”

The minister further explained that the irregular recruitment led to positions being filled without proper vetting, resulting in inefficiencies within the department. He reiterated his mission to “clean up the ministry to make sure that it is lean and efficient and carries out its works.”

This move aligns with the government’s broader initiative to review and reverse public sector appointments made after the 2024 elections, aiming to ensure that all recruitments adhere to established protocols and contribute to effective governance.
