Retired Supreme Court Justice Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe has passed away at the age of 74. He died on Saturday, April 5, 2025, after a short illness.

Justice Gbadegbe’s illustrious legal career spanned over three decades. He was appointed as a High Court judge in 1989, elevated to the Court of Appeal in 1999, and served as a Supreme Court Justice from 2009 until his retirement in December 2020 upon reaching the mandatory age of 70.

One of his notable contributions was as part of the nine-judge panel in the landmark 2012/2013 presidential election petition, which was a significant event in Ghana’s legal and democratic history.

Colleagues remember Justice Gbadegbe for his meticulous approach to the law and unwavering commitment to judicial ethics. Upon his retirement, then Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah lauded his long and dedicated service, noting that he had “brought a fire that cannot be quenched.”
