Public Transport Fares To Increase By 20% Starting Friday, August 8
Public transport fares across Ghana will see a 20% increase effective Friday, August 8, 2025, following a directive from the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) in collaboration with major transport unions. The adjustment aligns with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares.
In a statement signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman of the Council, the fare hike was attributed to three major factors placing a heavy financial burden on transport operators.

Firstly, operators pointed out that despite a 15% fare reduction implemented on May 21, 2025, there has been no corresponding decrease in the cost of spare parts, goods, and services, leaving them at a loss.
Secondly, the introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy has triggered an 8% increase in fuel prices, significantly raising daily operational costs for commercial drivers and transport companies.
Thirdly, deteriorating road conditions across the country have led to a surge in vehicle maintenance expenses, further compounding the challenges faced by transport service providers.
The 20% fare increase will apply across all categories of public transport shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” minibuses, long-distance intercity coaches, and haulage services.

“All commercial transport operators and companies are required to comply with the new fares and ensure they are visibly displayed at all loading terminals,” the statement emphasized.
The GRTCC has called on passengers, drivers, and the general public to cooperate with the new fare structure for its smooth implementation.
