Public Transport Fares To Drop 15% Beginning May 24
Beginning Saturday, May 24, 2025, transport fares across Ghana will be reduced by 15% following successful negotiations between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport.
The decision to reduce fares is based on recent macroeconomic developments, notably the sustained appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar, which has led to a significant drop in fuel prices.

This move also reflects broader market adjustments, including a call from the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association urging its members to reduce the prices of auto parts in response to the improved exchange rate.
Confirming the development in an interview with Citi News, Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), described the fare cut as a necessary step aligned with prevailing economic trends and aimed at easing the financial burden on commuters.
“We have finally agreed to reduce lorry fares by 15%, but it will take effect from Saturday. Although currently, spare parts sellers have promised to reduce some of their prices — which hasn’t taken effect yet — and none of the lubricants, which previously increased, have been reduced, we have decided to peg the fare reduction at 15%,” Imoro stated.
Passengers are expected to benefit from this adjustment as the transport sector responds to the changing economic climate.
