Prophet Kumchacha Backs Mahama’s GH¢1 Energy Levy, Urges Even Higher Rate
The founder of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Nicholas Osei popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha has publicly endorsed President John Mahama’s proposed fuel levy, expressing his support in a recent TikTok video that has stirred fresh debate.
The GH¢1 per litre levy, originally set to take effect on 9 June, has been postponed to 16 June following backlash from the public and concerns raised by oil marketing companies. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, stated that the delay was made “in the spirit of cordiality and partnership.”
Known for his outspoken and often controversial views, Prophet Kumchacha not only backed the levy but argued that the proposed amount was insufficient. “GH¢1 is too small,” he said, suggesting that a higher rate might be necessary to effectively support the country’s energy sector and resolve longstanding issues with fuel and electricity supply.

His comments have added a new layer to the national conversation around the fuel levy, with some praising his stance as pragmatic while others criticize the idea of placing additional financial pressure on Ghanaians.
John Mahama, your achievements are unmatched. The number of votes you garnered in your presidential bid is unprecedented since 1992, and you command the largest number of MPs in Parliament. You are the Alpha and Omega so why suggest just one cedi? You could have proposed two, and we’d never have to worry about electricity again.
In his remarks, Kumchacha also targeted social commentator Twene Jonas a known critic of the current administration mocking his views while strongly defending Mahama’s leadership.
