Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has been rushed to the hospital, missing his second consecutive court appearance in the ongoing $2 million Sky Train scandal.

His lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, informed the Accra High Court that the former GIIF board chair was taken to the hospital early Tuesday morning due to ill health. The presiding judge, Justice Comfort Tasiame, expressed concern over the recurring nature of Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s medical emergencies, which appear to align with scheduled court dates.

As a result, the case has been adjourned to Monday, May 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and Solomon Asamoah, the former CEO of GIIF, are facing charges filed by the Office of the Attorney General under Sections 23(1) and 179A(3)(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). The charges stem from a $2 million payment made in 2019 to Africa Investor Holdings Limited for the proposed Accra Sky Train project — a project that was never executed.

Court documents reveal that the payment was made without board approval, breaching procurement and governance procedures. The unauthorized release of the funds has led to criminal proceedings against both men.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, listed as the second accused, told investigators in his caution statement that he approved the payment based solely on a recommendation from the first accused, Solomon Asamoah. However, neither party has been able to account for the missing funds.

The case continues to raise serious questions about accountability and oversight in public financial management.
