President Mahama Bans First-Class Travel For Government Officials
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a ban on first-class air travel for government appointees as part of measures to reduce public spending and promote fiscal discipline. The directive, which takes immediate effect, also restricts non-essential foreign trips for ministers and other top officials.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of new ministers at the Jubilee House on Friday, February 7, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the need for responsible governance. “The resources at our disposal belong to the people of Ghana, and we must use them wisely. Luxury travel at the expense of the taxpayer is simply not justifiable,” he stated.
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Some Ghanaians have welcomed the decision as a step toward curbing government excesses and ensuring accountability. Others argue that the policy might be more symbolic than impactful, as many government officials may not have been traveling first-class to begin with.
Nonetheless, the move aligns with the Mahama administration’s broader strategy to run a lean government and prioritize national development over extravagant expenses. Officials are expected to comply with the directive, with consequences for those who violate the new travel restrictions. As Ghana continues to navigate economic challenges, the government’s commitment to cost-cutting measures will be closely monitored by citizens and stakeholders alike.
