President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the ports of Tema and Takoradi will soon begin operating 24 hours a day, as part of his administration’s broader 24-hour economy agenda aimed at boosting productivity, efficiency, and national development.

This initiative is expected to significantly enhance Ghana’s trade and logistics sector by enabling uninterrupted port operations, minimizing delays, and attracting greater investment.

Speaking at the 2025 Horticulture Expo, President Mahama highlighted that the transition to around-the-clock port services is being implemented in close coordination with key public institutions.

“I am pleased to inform you that the Ministry of Trade and Agriculture Business and Industry, together with the Ministry of Transport, is working collaboratively with the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Ghana Shippers’ Council, and other relevant stakeholders to soon declare Tema and Takoradi ports as 24-hour operational ports,” he said.

He emphasized that the move goes beyond merely extending working hours. It entails establishing a comprehensive infrastructure to support continuous economic activity.

“This includes developing the necessary infrastructure, improving energy supply, enhancing security, strengthening transport links, and building digital platforms to support sustained agricultural and industrial operations,” President Mahama explained.

Describing the initiative as “a strategy of hope anchored in efficiency and expertise,” he underscored its potential to transform Ghana into a premier trade hub in the West African region.
