Speaking at Jubilee House on February 18, 2025, after submitting his own asset declaration forms to the Auditor-General, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s stance on transparency and accountability, warning that appointees must comply or face removal.

“I have always maintained that preventing corruption is more effective than just punishing it. Asset declaration is a vital tool in this fight, and I expect every appointee to comply,” he stated.

He urged the Auditor-General to remind public officials of their legal duty under Article 286(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Act 550, which require declarations upon assuming office, every four years, and at the end of their tenure.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the March 31 deadline, emphasizing that all appointees had been given sufficient time to complete the process.

Ghana’s asset declaration system has often faced criticism for lacking transparency. Acknowledging these concerns, President Mahama called for reforms, including public disclosure of declarations to prevent the accumulation of unexplained wealth.

“I have chosen to submit mine publicly to promote greater openness. If properly enforced, this can serve as a strong deterrent to corruption,” he said.
