Over 500 Dismissed From Security Services After Recruitment Audit
More than 500 individuals have been removed from Ghana’s security services following a government-ordered audit that uncovered widespread irregularities in recruitment processes conducted before and after the December 2024 elections.
The announcement was made by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak on Monday, July 14, 2025, during the first edition of the Government Accountability Series in Accra.

A special committee reviewed the records of approximately 5,200 recruits and found that many failed to meet basic entry requirements, including academic qualifications, age limits, and medical fitness.
Affected agencies include:
-
Ghana Police Service – about 320 disqualified
-
Ghana Immigration Service – roughly 730 removed
-
Narcotics Control Commission – around 50 affected
Mr. Muntaka noted that public complaints and allegations of politically motivated recruitments especially following recruitment advertisements in August 2024 prompted the review.
“We found recruits in their 40s, some diabetic and medically unfit, who were not supposed to be in the service,” he said, adding that one MP had lobbied for a relative who had failed all subjects in the SSSCE the minimum academic requirement.
Each disqualified person, he said, was given a written explanation for their removal.
To restore public trust, the Minister announced new recruitment guidelines that will clearly define academic and non-academic roles. Future intake will include artisans such as drivers, tailors, and cooks, but those individuals will be recruited strictly for support roles not officer positions.

“We need dressmakers to sew uniforms,” he said, “but they must know they’re being hired as artisans.”
The audit is part of a broader effort to restore professionalism and transparency in Ghana’s security sector, following concerns over political interference and unqualified enlistments.
The Government Accountability Series is a new platform introduced by the Presidency to provide regular updates on governance and ministerial performance. Other ministers are expected to present their briefings in the coming weeks.
