The family of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has formally petitioned INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau and the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files (CCF) to delete the Red Notice issued against him. They allege that Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) abused its administrative authority to secure the notice.

In a statement released on Monday, June 9, the family condemned the Red Notice, arguing that the OSP’s actions violate due process, infringe on constitutional rights, and contravene international law.

The family further contends that the arrest warrant—issued on February 11, 2025—was obtained under irregular circumstances, notably without an affidavit to justify its issuance. They also point out that despite the existence of the warrant, no formal charges have been filed against Ofori-Atta.

In their petition to INTERPOL and the CCF, the family calls for the immediate removal of the Red Notice, claiming it was based on manipulated evidence and the concealment of critical medical information.

They characterize the OSP’s pursuit of Ofori-Atta as a “premeditated vendetta,” and argue that the ongoing process reflects a deliberate misuse of power.

The family’s statement follows a public announcement by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, who revealed that his office had initiated the process for issuing a Red Notice. If accepted, it could result in Ofori-Atta facing international arrest and possible extradition.

During a press conference, Agyebeng rejected Ofori-Atta’s request for a virtual appearance, insisting on his physical presence.

“This office has always requested his attendance,” Agyebeng stated. “We are unwilling to waive it. If we were open to taking a statement in absentia, we would have done so in February—not waited until June 2, 2025.”

He added, “A suspect in a criminal investigation does not dictate the terms of engagement. We will not tolerate this conduct—not in this case.”
