After high school, he enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to study Metallurgical Engineering but later deferred his studies to pursue a career in music.
Initially, his decision was met with resistance from his family, particularly his mother, who was concerned about his academic commitments. She even considered disciplinary measures, including involving the authorities. Over time, as Olivetheboy’s music gained popularity, his family’s stance softened. His father, a Presbyterian pastor, who was initially opposed to his musical pursuits, eventually became supportive, with his favorite track being “Goodsin.”
Olivetheboy began his music career in 2020, shortly after completing high school. He released his debut EP, “Avana,” in May 2023, featuring the hit single “Goodsin,” which became the most streamed song in Ghana during the first half of 2023. His rising prominence led to a significant milestone in August 2023 when he signed with Sony Music’s Columbia Records through its subsidiary, Bu Vision Entertainment. That same month, he was honored as Apple Music’s Up Next Star, a recognition given to artists who have topped global music charts.
In an interview, Olivetheboy shared insights into his musical journey and the origin of his stage name. He revealed that his mother is a singer, and growing up, he was exposed to her music, which sparked his interest in songwriting from a young age. He also mentioned that he initially faced resistance from his family when he embarked on his musical journey, but over time, they became supportive.
Today, Olivetheboy is celebrated not only for his musical talent but also for his resilience in overcoming familial and societal expectations to pursue his passion. His story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring artists navigating similar challenges.
