Nurses’ Strike Hits Day Three As Standoff With Government Deepens; Health Services Disrupted
Members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have entered the third day of a nationwide strike, causing major disruptions to health services across the country.
The industrial action, which began on June 2, 2025, started with a phased withdrawal of outpatient care and may escalate to a full suspension of services if the government fails to meet the association’s demands.

The GRNMA launched the strike in protest over the government’s alleged failure to implement a collective agreement signed in May 2024. The agreement, intended to improve working conditions and settle outstanding allowances, was further upheld by a court ruling in January 2025. Despite this legal backing, the terms remain unenforced.

Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Ministry of Health have labeled the strike “illegal,” citing the GRNMA’s failure to follow the proper procedures under the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651). Government officials claim the association did not give adequate notice or exhaust all avenues of negotiation before initiating the strike.
Nevertheless, the GRNMA insists the strike is lawful and necessary. Association leaders argue that the government has left them no choice but to act, and they have set up task forces to ensure full compliance among their members. They maintain that the strike will continue until their demands are comprehensively addressed.
