No Foreign Films Allowed On Presidential Jet – President Mahama Insists
President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s creative arts sector by declaring that only Ghanaian-made movies will be shown on the presidential jet.
Speaking at the launch of the Black Star Experience at Black Star Square on May 1, 2025, President Mahama announced that he would reinstate a directive he first issued during his previous administration to prioritize local content aboard the presidential aircraft.
“I remember when I was president before, I gave a directive that no foreign movies should be shown on the presidential jet—we watched only Ghanaian films. I’m going to give that directive again,” he stated to enthusiastic applause.
According to him, the presidential aircraft, which is currently undergoing servicing, will be refitted with a library of Ghanaian films upon its return. “When it comes back from servicing, I’ll tell them to change all the foreign movies and replace them with Ghanaian ones,” he affirmed.
Mahama recounted fond memories of watching Ghanaian films, including a humorous Kumawood production featuring actors LilWin and Van Vicker.
“I watched a very interesting one between LilWin and Van Vicker. Armed robbers had attacked Van Vicker, and LilWin and his wife found him. His wife asked where the man came from, and LilWin said he was a white man who had fallen from a plane,” he said with laughter. “These are interesting films. We have the talent.”
The President’s comments were made as part of the launch of the Black Star Experience, a year-long initiative designed to position Ghana as a top cultural and tourism destination. The program will feature fashion shows, music competitions, street festivals, film events, and other creative showcases.
Highlighting his long-standing appreciation for the arts, President Mahama also recalled his time as a student at the University of Ghana, where he participated in drama performances that celebrated African culture.
“This renewed focus is not just nostalgic—it’s a clear commitment to invest in our cultural identity. Ghanaian filmmakers have talent, and we must showcase it proudly,” he concluded.
