Renowned Ghanaian gospel singer and preacher, Evangelist Sonnie Badu, has observed that gospel musicians in Nigeria receive significantly more support from pastors and affluent individuals than those in Ghana.

In an interview with Mama Pat on Promise FM in Kumasi, Sonnie Badu attributed the strength of Nigeria’s gospel music industry to a robust support structure that provides substantial financial backing to artistes.

He explained that Nigerian pastors are often willing to invest generously in gospel musicians, particularly those whose ministries have proven impact and international reach.

“Nigeria has strong support systems. For instance, when Nathaniel Bassey hosts his Hallelujah Challenge, pastors alone can contribute between $300,000 and $400,000,” Sonnie Badu disclosed.

According to him, such financial support is frequently offered without the need for public fundraising.

“Pastors will personally reach out, ask for your bank details, and before you know it, large sums have been transferred,” he said.

Beyond pastoral support, Sonnie Badu noted that wealthy businessmen and billionaires in Nigeria also play a major role in empowering gospel musicians, often gifting them money, vehicles, and other resources.

“Alongside pastors, there are affluent individuals who regularly bless musicians with cash and cars. They truly value the gift and invest heavily in it,” he stated.

He emphasized that this culture of generosity allows Nigerian gospel artistes to flourish, grow their ministries, and produce top-quality music.

Drawing a comparison with Ghana, Sonnie Badu acknowledged that while the country is rich in musical talent, it lacks a similar level of structured financial and institutional support.

“Ghana has incredible talent, but we don’t have the same support systems as Nigeria,” he noted.

However, he added that some Ghanaian pastors are willing to support musicians but are often limited by financial capacity.

“I know young Ghanaian pastors who would do more to support gospel musicians if they had the resources,” he concluded.
