My Own Mum Wanted Me To Quit Music – Wendy Shay Opens Up
Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay has revealed that relentless online trolling nearly drove her to abandon her music career.
Speaking on the Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope Shopsydoo, Wendy described herself as “the most bullied artiste in Ghana,” recounting the intense backlash she received, especially early in her career, when critics accused her of trying to imitate the late Ebony Reigns.
“At a point, my mum asked me to quit music and return to Germany because the trolling was overwhelming—it affected everyone in my family,” she shared. “Some of my relatives were even hesitant to associate with me at the time.”
Wendy said she understood her family’s reaction, given the harsh and often personal nature of the ridicule she faced.

“Imagine seeing your face edited to look like an old woman, shared just to mock and laugh at you. People said I had no talent. It was brutal. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy—but it made me stronger,” she said.
Despite the emotional toll, Wendy acknowledged that she was fortunate to have supporters who believed in her talent and encouraged her to keep going. Since breaking into the music scene, she has earned multiple accolades, including awards from the 3Music Awards and the Ghana Music Awards.
Her latest single, It’s Too Late, is currently enjoying widespread airplay and has topped various music charts globally.
