My Childhood Dream Was To Be An Architect – Diana Hamilton
Celebrated gospel musician Diana Hamilton has opened up about how her early ambition to become an architect unexpectedly evolved into a career in nursing a decision greatly influenced by her late aunt.

Speaking on The Career Trail on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, Mrs. Hamilton shared that as a child, her fascination with creativity and technical drawing made her confident that architecture was her destined path.
“At one point, I was convinced I would be an architect because I was really good at technical drawing. That probably helped shape my creativity. Nursing was never part of the plan,” she said.
However, her career trajectory changed shortly after completing Ghana National College.
“I had finished Ghana National College and was deciding whether to go to KNUST when a lady approached my father and suggested I should pursue nursing. My father agreed — and surprisingly, I didn’t protest,” she revealed.
Diana explained that her eventual calling to nursing had unknowingly been planted years earlier during her Junior Secondary School days, when her aunt, a nurse battling breast cancer, came to live with their family.

“While I was in JSS, my mother’s sister — who was a nurse — moved in with us. She was battling breast cancer, but she taught me how to care for her. She showed me how to give injections, dress wounds, and make her bed. She taught me everything about nursing long before I ever thought of it as a career,” she recalled.
That formative experience became the basis of her heartfelt response during her nursing school interview at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
“When they asked why I wanted to be a nurse, I told them about my aunt. She was such a beautiful woman — stylish, yet deeply professional. I wanted to be just like her,” Diana said.
Her journey into nursing eventually led her to become a registered nurse and practice in the United Kingdom.
Explaining why she didn’t continue nursing in Ghana, the award-winning gospel singer said most of her musical opportunities were in the UK, making frequent travel back and forth difficult.
“I did my rotation at Korle Bu for about two years. During that time, I was traveling in and out of London for music. It became too stressful, so I decided to settle in the UK,” she added.
Diana Hamilton’s story serves as an inspiring reminder that sometimes life’s detours can lead to equally fulfilling callings — in her case, blending compassion, care, and creativity in both nursing and gospel music.
