Music Made More Money In The DVD and VCD Days – Obaapa Christy
Gospel singer Obaapa Christy has revealed that musicians made more money during the DVD and VCD era compared to today’s digital streaming age.
Speaking on UTV’s cooking show with Empress Gifty, the award-winning artiste explained that the music industry was more financially rewarding back then because artists had full control over the sales of their work.

“During the VCD and DVD times, we made a lot of money. You could sell your CDs directly and see your earnings immediately. Now, everything is online, and we don’t really see the money the same way,” she said.
Obaapa Christy shared that in those days, physical sales through concerts, churches, and music shops provided instant income. However, with streaming platforms dominating the industry, musicians now have to rely on views and digital royalties, which take longer to accumulate and often yield less profit.

She also noted that piracy and the ease of online sharing have made it difficult for artists to fully benefit from their hard work.
“Back then, you had to buy the CD to listen to music. But now, people can just download or stream for free. It’s not easy for musicians these days,” she added.
Despite the challenges, Obaapa Christy encouraged musicians to adapt to the changing industry by embracing digital platforms while finding innovative ways to earn from their craft.
