President John Dramani Mahama has officially commissioned Phases 1 and 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project, describing it as a significant milestone in Ghana’s journey to becoming a leading trade and logistics hub in West Africa.

The $1.5 billion project, carried out through a public-private partnership involving Meridian Port Services (MPS), Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), APM Terminals, and Africa Global Logistics (AGL), is regarded by the government as one of the largest and most ambitious port infrastructure developments in sub-Saharan Africa.

Addressing guests at the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, November 13, President Mahama emphasized the project’s potential to create jobs, attract investment, and boost multiple sectors of the economy, positioning Ghana as a preferred gateway for international trade and maritime operations.

“This project is the realization of a dream we have nurtured for years to establish Ghana as the gateway to West Africa. Today, that dream becomes a tangible reality, symbolizing both national aspiration and international confidence. The expansion of Tema Port strengthens Ghana’s reputation as a reliable and efficient hub for trade and investment,” he said.

He added, “With improved logistics, shorter turnaround times, and greater efficiency, this port will enhance Ghana’s global competitiveness. Our exports will reach markets faster, and imports will become more accessible and affordable for businesses and consumers. In a world driven by speed, technology, and efficiency, the modernization of Tema Port provides Ghana with a strategic advantage, attracting investments, creating jobs, and facilitating trade across sectors.”
