Parliament approved the repeal of these taxes on March 26, 2025, paving the way for the President’s assent on April 2, 2025. The abolished taxes include:
Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy): Introduced in 2022, this levy imposed a 1.5% tax on electronic transactions, such as mobile money transfers and online payments. Its removal is expected to encourage digital transactions and increase disposable income for individuals and businesses.
Betting Tax: This tax levied a 10% charge on gross winnings from gambling activities. Its repeal is anticipated to benefit stakeholders in the gaming industry.
Emissions Tax: Aimed at curbing pollution, this tax faced criticism from businesses and the public. Its abolition aligns with the government’s efforts to reduce the overall tax burden.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, expressing his satisfaction with the development, succinctly stated, “It is finished,” highlighting the completion of this legislative process.
The removal of these taxes reflects the government’s commitment to improving the economic well-being of its citizens and fostering a more conducive environment for business and innovation.
