President John Mahama has nominated His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s next Chief Justice following the removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, September 23, by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, stated that the nomination was in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution. His name has since been submitted to the Council of State for consideration.

A statement from the Presidency praised Justice Baffoe-Bonnie for his “diligence and integrity” throughout a judicial career spanning the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court. It further noted his “invaluable contributions to Ghanaian jurisprudence” and his “unwavering commitment to justice,” affirming his qualification for the role.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since the suspension and subsequent removal of Justice Torkornoo. As the most senior among the nine remaining justices of the Supreme Court, his appointment aligns with judicial succession principles.

Born on December 26, 1956, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie brings more than three decades of distinguished service to the judiciary. Before joining the Supreme Court in 2008, he held roles as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, a High Court Judge, and a Circuit Court Judge. Earlier in his career, he worked at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as Principal Inspector of Taxes and Head of Legal for the Eastern and Volta Regions.

An alumnus of Konongo-Odumase Secondary School, he studied law at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, setting the foundation for a long and impactful legal career.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is widely respected for his expertise in constitutional law, taxation, election law, prison administration, and legal education. He has played a pivotal role in judicial reforms and remains committed to promoting ethical practice and professional development.

Currently, he chairs several key committees within the Judicial Service, including the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council, the Election Management Committee, and the Finance Committee. He has also represented Ghana at numerous international judicial conferences and capacity-building programmes.
