His comments followed a public demonstration led by New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, in protest of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The demonstrators marched to the Jubilee House to present a petition, having earlier submitted similar petitions to Parliament and the Judicial Service.

Addressing the demonstrators, Dogbe emphasized the government’s respect for democratic freedoms, particularly the right to peaceful assembly.

“President Mahama has always supported the people’s right to peaceful protest and will continue to do so,” he stated. “We urge all citizens to exercise their freedoms responsibly and within the confines of the law.”

Dogbe underscored the importance of lawful demonstrations in any vibrant democracy, noting that they are a sign of healthy civic engagement rather than disorder.

“So long as protests remain lawful and non-violent, they are not just tolerated but welcomed as part of democratic participation,” he affirmed.

He also called for cooperation between demonstrators and state authorities, encouraging peaceful conduct while assuring the public of the government’s role in ensuring safety and order.

“We encourage demonstrators to uphold peace and protect public property. In return, the government remains dedicated to safeguarding their rights and ensuring their security,” Dogbe added.

The statement by the Deputy Chief of Staff serves as a reminder of the Mahama administration’s stance on upholding democratic principles, particularly at a time when political tensions and public scrutiny of governance are on the rise.
