Mahama Abolishes Fuel Allowances For Political Appointees

President John Dramani Mahama has, with immediate effect, suspended the payment and allocation of fuel allowances to all political appointees, as part of broader efforts by his administration to cut public spending.

The directive was announced on Tuesday, July 15, through an official statement from the Presidency, signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

According to the statement, the measure is intended to reduce government expenditure and reallocate resources to key priority areas.

“The President believes that leadership must also share in the sacrifices it is asking of the citizenry,” the statement emphasized, underscoring the administration’s resolve to lead by example during challenging economic times.

This action adds to a series of austerity measures implemented under the Mahama government. Other recent initiatives include downsizing government by appointing fewer ministers and presidential staff, and cutting satellite TV subscriptions for the Presidency and other state agencies.

The announcement comes less than 24 hours before the introduction of a GHS1.00 levy on every litre of fuel purchased at the pump.

The government has stated that the levy is intended to help the Ministry of Energy secure adequate funds for fuel procurement to support power generation.
