Professor Angela Ofori-Atta, wife of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has dismissed claims that her husband is avoiding accountability, stating he is currently receiving medical treatment in the United States following prostate cancer surgery.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on Monday, June 16, 2025, Professor Ofori-Atta explained that a biopsy conducted in March confirmed the diagnosis, leading to surgery on Friday, June 13, at the Mayo Clinic in the U.S. She said all relevant medical documentation was submitted to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) by Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team.

“This wasn’t an attempt to delay the process,” she clarified. “We were transparent with the Special Prosecutor. They were informed that a biopsy would take place in March, and when the results confirmed cancer, the doctors scheduled surgery for June. That information was provided through proper legal channels.”

Her comments come in the wake of public debate following an Interpol red notice reportedly issued at the request of the OSP after Mr. Ofori-Atta failed to appear for questioning in an ongoing corruption investigation.

Professor Ofori-Atta firmly rejected any suggestion of her husband fleeing accountability.

“The Ken that we all know does not run away from accountability,” she said. “We saw that during the censure motion. He spoke publicly about his work. He has appeared before the courts and before CHRAJ. This is not someone who hides.”

She added that even while undergoing medical treatment, Mr. Ofori-Atta offered to respond to the OSP through legal means or via video.

“Even during this stressful period, he said, ‘Let me respond by video. That’s allowed. Let my lawyers speak for me.’ So I don’t understand what is going on,” she said.

When asked whether Mr. Ofori-Atta intends to return to Ghana to face the OSP in person, she responded:

“Ghana is home. When he is well and the doctors give the go-ahead, he will come and answer any questions. But right now, he needs to recover.”
