The 50-bed facility, fully funded through the Ghana Police Service’s welfare program, marks the second such hospital established by the Service since the first was built in Accra in 1976.

Initiated in 2015 by then-Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Nathan Kofi Boakye (rtd), the project faced significant delays during its early stages due to various challenges. However, it was revived in 2020 with strong backing from the police welfare scheme’s steering committee, leading to its successful completion.

The modern facility includes a standby ambulance to enhance emergency response capabilities.

Meanwhile, work is progressing on a 100-bed police hospital in Tamale, expected to be completed by the end of the year, further strengthening the provision of quality health care for communities in the northern region.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony last Thursday, Interior Minister Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka expressed admiration for the police service’s initiative in financing the project without relying on external donors or central government support.

He praised the leadership of the Ghana Police Service for taking a bold step toward ensuring sustainable healthcare access for personnel who risk their lives daily to maintain national security.

As the sector minister, he pledged to support the hospital’s upkeep and to ensure it remains fully equipped and well-maintained. He also urged the police administration to uphold a culture of regular maintenance to preserve the facility’s quality and functionality.

The Minister further announced that recruitment processes had begun for medical staff at both the Kumasi and Tamale police hospitals to enable them to operate at full capacity for the benefit of all users.
