The announcement was made on Saturday, May 31, 2025, during a community engagement in Goaso as part of his nationwide “Thank You” tour following the 2024 general elections.

The proposed institution would be the first public university in the Ahafo Region, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to tertiary education in underserved areas.

“This university will offer quality education in agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences,” Mahama said, emphasizing the region’s economic reliance on agriculture and its potential for development.

According to Mahama, the initiative is part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s broader strategy to promote equitable access to higher education and equip students with skills that align with the region’s economic strengths.

In addition to the university, Mahama revealed plans to upgrade select nursing and midwifery training institutions in Ahafo into degree-awarding institutions. He also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to logistics support, stating that buses would continue to be provided to senior high schools and health training institutes to enhance academic work and mobility.
