If You Haven’t Declared Your Assets By May 7, Consider Yourself Dismissed – Mahama Warns Appointees
President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm ultimatum to all political appointees: declare your assets by close of day Wednesday, May 7, 2025, or face immediate dismissal.
The directive, delivered on Monday, May 5, during the official launch of the Code of Conduct for Political Appointees, underscores the Mahama administration’s tough stance on accountability and anti-corruption.
President Mahama emphasized that asset declaration is not a bureaucratic formality, but a crucial tool in promoting transparency and deterring the abuse of public office.

“For all those who were appointed or nominated before 31st March 2025 and failed to meet the deadline, you are to forfeit three months of salary to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund,” the President announced.
In addition to the salary forfeiture, defaulters will also be required to donate an additional month’s salary to the MahamaCares Trust Fund, resulting in a total four-month pay deduction. But the consequences do not end there.
“If by close of day Wednesday, 7th May 2025, any of you still fails to declare your assets, count yourself automatically dismissed,” Mahama warned.
He stressed that the newly introduced Code of Conduct will be enforced across all levels of political leadership, covering ministers, deputy ministers, presidential staffers, CEOs, Council of State members, and board members.
“This is a government of shared responsibility, and there will be no sacred cows,” he said. “The Code applies to the Vice President, myself, the Chief of Staff, and all advisors. We are all bound by its provisions.”
Among the Code’s major stipulations are:
-
A total ban on political appointees purchasing state assets — including land, vehicles, shares, or buildings — directly or through proxies.
-
Strict limits on accepting gifts above GH¢20,000 without formal declaration.
-
Prohibition of the use of public funds for personal gifts or festive hampers.
“Any appointee found attempting to acquire state assets will have their appointment terminated,” Mahama stated.
To bolster enforcement, the President also announced the creation of a public reporting portal, allowing citizens to confidentially report suspected violations of the Code. These reports, he assured, will be investigated transparently and fairly.
“I invite the citizens of Ghana to play a role in monitoring compliance with this Code,” he concluded.
This move marks one of the most comprehensive accountability frameworks rolled out by any Ghanaian administration, signaling Mahama’s intention to lead a government grounded in ethical leadership and public trust.
